Belmont Stakes Fans: This year Belmont’s top two contenders, Journalism and Sovereignty, are receiving all of the “buzz” talk as many are thinking it is a two-horse race. The fact that the race is being held at Saratoga and at a shortened 1¼-mile distance suggests more variables in the selection equation. Recovery time, although more of an issue at 1½-miles, could still be a valid consideration, although the smaller field size makes post position less crucial and should lead to trouble-free trips. Additionally, to the two co-favorites, there is a rested quality speed horse (Rodriguez) and a fresh proven closer (Baeza) ready and willing to prove their merits. These questions must be answered:

 1.Can the gutsy closer Journalism, winner of 5 out of 7, do it again at a distance he should relish. He won after 2 weeks rest, can he do it again after 3 weeks?

2.Was Sovereignty’s Derby win the product of a perfect trip. He has yet to win with speed on his outside (Rodriguez, Caged and Crudo). A “bothered” path seems probable with the “in the clear” closers Baeza and Journalism looming.

In short, this race is open to an exciting finish and, possibly, with an upset winner. Clearly, the fastest horse will win this race.

 There is such a horse and he WILL win the race. In fact, he is so explosive they will have to call in the SWAT TEAM!
